Someone asked about non-fiction. I enjoy reading about the lives of artists who work in other mediums. Not as often about musicians, unless it’s written by Greil Marcus. Olivia Laing writes about great artists much in the way of Calvin Tomkins’ “The Lives of Artists” series. Learning about artists I wasn’t necessarily familiar with makes for very engaging reading. When you haven’t even seen their work before, yet you are reading about them creating something in their studio and having a coffee with the writer, I don’t know, there’s something cool about that. Olivia’s piece on David Wojnarowicz is especially moving.
